How to Write a Killer Press Release

How to Write a Killer Press Release, otherwise known as a News Release

Press releases are an underused and mostly neglected art form for the promotion of your online business. It's a totally different form of communication about your web site. Any news that you can consider important enough to boost on behalf of your business should be played to the fullest extent.

Because of it's importance, here are some tips on using this medium that can get lots of bonus traffic to your web site.

1. To make maximum use of this overlooked communication format, you should write a press release about new products or services you're offering on your web site. I'm not talking about products that you put on sale for 3 days at $7.00, but rather for important products that you will hopefully sell for a long time.

To sound like news, aka press release, relate your information in the form of a story. Insert details of your business in the body of the story. And of course, hi-light the product or service you want to promote.

2. Make sure your press release doesn't read like an ad, it must sound like news.

3. Your press release should never be more than one page in length.

4. Your header, contact information and release date should always be at the top of your copy. Always double space your lines. And be sure to use short sentences.

5. The copy of your header is critical. The first few sentences after the header must seize the attention of your readers. Editors are even more picky, and hard to please than you or me. So you really need to grab their attention in the first 6 seconds or so.

6. Proofread your press release many times. Look for grammar and spelling mistakes. Don't do like most of the ezine publishers that send you email several times a week. There are always countless errors. They never once proofread what they are send you.

7. When it's finally ready, send your press release only to the media specializing in the topic of your news release

Following is a list of reasons for doing a press release.

Create a press release:
-- the results of an online survey you had taken.

-- about online products or services you're giving away.

-- about new software you had done for the benefit of your visitors to your web site.

-- about your opening of a new web site, stating the special purpose it will serve.

-- about a new e-book or special report you wrote.

-- about a new contest you're having for your affiliates, or your visitors.

-- about a joint venture you're offering for a new product.

-- make a big splash about an award your business or web site participated in, and did win.

-- a regular e-zine you're publishing.

-- about an online membership site or club you're starting.

-- if you're planning a fund-raising event, say so proudly.

-- about a free seminar you're hosting, especially if it's a unique topic.
